Kauanui’s research areas include: anarchist theory and politics, Native Hawaiian sovereignty; comparative Indigenous politics; settler colonialism; decolonization; gender & sexuality; nationalism; critical race theory; early 20th century scientific studies on Hawaiian racial mixing and attendant issues of eugenics and governmentality; Pacific Islander diasporic politics in the United States; whiteness studies in relation to indigeneity; settler colonialism and the roots of fascism; decolonizing trauma studies and trauma healing modalities; and the politics of post-punk music.
